Indian farmers 2024 protest

Updated: Apr 11, 2024

The 2024 Indian farmers’ protest began on the morning of February 13, 2024. Farmers are demanding the government’s guarantee on assured floor prices or Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crop production, echoing the sentiments of the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest1. Here are some key points about the ongoing protest:

Goals

  • ₹10,000 per month for every farmer above 60 years.

  • Fixed daily wages for farming under MGNREGA, with ₹700 a day and 200 days of guaranteed employment per year.

  • Government to ensure at least 50% profit over overall cost of production.

  • Legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for all crops.

  • Implementation of the recommendations of the MS Swaminathan committee on agriculture.

  • Justice for Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Methods of protest

  • Demonstrations

  • Sit-ins (Dharna)

  • tractor march

Recent developments

  • The farmers converged at the borders and attempted to march to the National Capital Region (India), New Delhi, after negotiations between farmers’ leaders and government officials on February 12 yielded no result.

  • Police sealed the borders and placed barricades to prevent farmers from entering the capital city.

  • Tear gas canisters and water cannons were used to disperse the gathering crowds of farmers who turned out on tractors, trucks, and foot.

  • Section 144 was imposed for a month, preventing gatherings of three or more people.

Despite the ongoing tensions, Western media has portrayed the protest as peaceful, while farmers have shown signs of determination, even bringing earth-moving machines to the protest site. The struggle continues as farmers persist in their demands for fair treatment and economic justice.
